Global M&A Reaches Post-Crisis High

2014 was a banner year for global M&A,  according to year-end League Table rankings from Thomson Reuters, Mergermarket and Bloomberg.

  • Thomson Reuters reported worldwide M&A activity increased 47 percent from last year, while cross-border M&A more than doubled, totaling $1.3 trillion.
  • Taking a close look at industry trends, MergerMarket found that energy, mining and utilities was the leading M&A sector, with 1,638 deals totaling $632.5 billion, up 48 percent from last year. The pharma, medical and biotech sector reached an all-time high value of $380 billion.
  • The number of cross-border deals was the highest ever, at 5,501. The value of the deals, totaling $1,399 billion, was an 82.6 percent increase from 2013.

In rankings for legal advisers, Baker & McKenzie ranked No. 7 by value for deals with a US target, and No. 8 by value for any deals with US involvement. Also, the Firm completed more cross-border M&A transactions than any other law firm. Baker & McKenzie remains No. 1 for both announced and completed M&A emerging markets deals.
